Calling Academy aims to enrich boys beyond the confines of the academic curriculum. To achieve this, enrichment modules have been integrated into the school timetable. These modules vary in length and can be adjusted depending on the needs and the school programme.

It has been estimated that only around 34% of children in South Africa grow up with their father in the same household. In 2014, 61% of babies born in South Africa had no details of a father on their birth certificate. The impact of absent fathers on the social fabric of South Africa, as in other parts of the world, is immense. Calling Education wants to be part of the solution by helping boys develop a healthy framework for fatherhood. The Future Fathers focus has been part of Calling Education’s vision from the inception of the organisation. Future Fathers is a recurring enrichment module during a learner’s time at the school. Both Mr Jannie Kirsten and Mr Samora Menze attended Master Mentor training at The World Needs a Father before they started teaching at Calling Academy. Mr Kirsten currently heads up this module.

New solutions. Fresh thinking. Business acumen. These abilities need to be awakened in our youth. Entrepreneurial thinking is required to solve business and social problems and needs to be pro-actively developed. The Entrepreneurship module is currently optional and is presented during the June holiday in collaboration with 4Challenge, a Dutch serious gaming company.

In a world where shifts in technology bring about constant change, the ability to code can be a powerful addition to anyone’s résumé and will become more important in the coming years. Calling boys all get exposure to Blockly coding through the tablets of School-in-a-Box that are used by the school.

The Emerging Leaders module was intended to start later in 2020. Given the impact that the national lockdown has had on the school calendar, this module might be postponed to 2021.
